The transition from being a high school student-athlete to a college student-athlete is quite different for everyone. While some decide to compete at programs close to home, some decide that out of State schools are more their fancy.

Some athletes decide that big Division 1 programs is where they want to compete while still others decide on DII, DIII, Juco, or even Ivy League programs.

Everyone that takes the next step and competes at the collegiate level has a different, unique story, but some of the experiences and lessons along the way are universal. Running at the collegiate level is a commitment with sometimes very different experiences from what runners experienced in high school. Our goal is to share those experiences and offer a glimpse into the life of the collegiate athlete irregardless of the size, quality or affiliation of the school.

DP - What's the biggest difference in college training versus HS?

Canaan - The biggest difference between college and high school running is mileage. I have seen a pretty big increase in the amount of miles I run on a weekly basis.

DP - How's the adjustment going from living at home to being out of state attending college at SCAD?

The adjustment has actually been good. Between running and classes I’ve been really busy. It’s cool because there is always something going on at SCAD and, if not with SCAD, in the city of Savannah itself. Everyone is really welcoming here and they do their best to help you through the transition.

DP - How is the team at SCAD?

SCAD's XC and track teams are amazing. We are like one big family. The people on this team are really cool and I’ve made some great new friends! The team also helps with being homesick.

DP - Any hints or words of advice for seniors looking to run in college?

Email the schools you are interested in. It does wonders for helping you get recruited! And, when you get on the team, don’t let yourself get down because you aren’t the fastest guy like you might have been in high school. There are some crazy fast kids in college. Just focus on your own training schedule that your coach gives you and you will see improvement!
