Canaan Kitterman - College Signings - Savannah College of Art and Design

Bayshore senior and DistancePreps.com blogger Canaan Kitterman has signed with the Savannah College of Art and Design after a highly successful high school distance career to compete at the next level for the "Bee's".  This is the second high profile signing of a Sunshine State harrier in as many years after Ft Myers Green wave stand-out Ace Brown's signing to SCAD last year.

How was the recruitment process for you? Awesome, and really fun. I got to meet some very cool runners and coaches at every stop. Very grateful for all the help that was given from every visit along the way. I made a lot new friends that I will stay in touch with.

What school were in the hunt at the end? I visited a lot of schools in the NAIA, DIII, DII and DI. Nova Southeastern, University of South Florida, Embry-Riddle but in the end it came down to Shawnee State (Portsmouth, OH), Florida Southern and SCAD.

How did SCAD win out? The academic path that I would like to pursue is game design and I could either take on the technical side or the art/design side. SCAD has both and is ranked as a top ten school nationally in game design! The coach, team and atmosphere were awesome. Really loved the city of Savannah, it just felt like home.

Now the decision has been made, what are your goals for this season? It was totally exhausting going on all those visits week after week so now I just want to chill and see what I can do. Really want to make it to the state meet and see if I can make some noise there.

What advise do you have for the juniors out there that have this process in front of them? Don't be scared to reach out and contact coaches at schools that interest you. It doesn't mean you are not good enough that they aren't calling you. But it allows you to get your stats in front of the coaches and that you are totally interested in the school. Coaches have a lot of athletes to look at so standing out from the crowd and showing you are go getter is nothing but a good thing. Have fun!
